April 30, 2015
Shoshana Goldberg, MPH, doctoral student in maternal and child health at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, has won a graduate research award from the UNC College of Arts and Sciences’ Program in Sexuality Studies.
In announcing the award, Richard Cante, PhD, director of the sexuality studies program and associate professor of media and technology studies in the communication studies department, said the adjudication committee found the research to be “excellent” and “extraordinary.”
“I’m thrilled to receive this award and greatly appreciate the support and endorsement from the UNC Sexuality Studies Program,” Goldberg said. “Funds from the award will be used to support my dissertation, which integrates rigorous quantitative methods and interdisciplinary theories and frameworks to explore social and structural determinants of adolescent LGBTQ sexual initiation and long-term sexual health. In completing the work, I hope to emulate the values and mission of the multidisciplinary Sexuality Studies Program, which is centered around the ‘the study of sexual/gender identities … and the varying ways human sexual identities and experiences can be constructed and interpreted.'”
“Shoshana is passionate about the issue of health disparities among sexual minorities,” said Carolyn Halpern, PhD, professor and interim chair of maternal and child health at the Gillings School and Goldberg’s adviser. “Her innovative dissertation research will help us to better understand the many patterns and circumstances of sexual initiation among sexual minorities, and whether variations in these experiences during adolescence have longer-term implications for sexual and reproductive health.”
Goldberg will accept the award on May 3 at Lavender Graduation, a special commencement event that honors graduating minors in the sexuality studies program, graduating LGBTIQ-identified students and their allies.
