Gina Hidalgo, a graduate student in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the Gillings School, won the Campus Sustainability photo contest. Hidalgo’s submission is titled Managing Dust, and provides an inside look at the UNC School of Nursing’s Carrington Renewal Project.

Hidalgo, who studies exposure science, snapped the photo because it represents the controls implemented to mitigate exposures to those working on the building and the general public.

The presence of dust and other health hazards can often be invisible to our eyes,” said Hidalgo. “Controlling them is an ethical responsibility toward those involved. The prioritization of engineering controls reflects Carolina’s commitment to protecting people and ensuring safe, sustainable practices.”

On October 25, the UNC School of Nursing hosted its Groundbreaking Celebration for the new Nursing Education Building. At the ceremony, leaders, alumni and students shared how the new building will transform nursing education at Carolina.

This new nursing education building is more than just bricks and mortar,” said UNC School of Nursing Dean and Professor Valerie Howard in her ceremony speech. “It will be a space where innovation thrives, our students will have access to cutting edge simulation labs, interprofessional learning spaces, and technology that mirrors the evolving healthcare landscape.”

The demolition, seen in Hidalgo’s photo, took place in fall 2024. The renewal project will replace Carrington’s west wing, built in 1969. The new, state of the art building will be ADA compliant, and feature larger labs and classrooms with more natural light.

In 2005, a 70,000 square foot addition to Carrington Hall received LEED certification — the building was the first in the UNC System to receive the certification.
