Dr. Stephen Cole

Dr. Stephen Cole

Stephen Cole, PhD, is the 2015 recipient of the American College of Epidemiology (ACE) Award for Outstanding Contributions to Epidemiology.

A professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, Cole was selected to receive the award based on his significant efforts to develop and advance epidemiologic methods.

“The ACE award is a well-deserved national recognition of Dr. Cole’s major contributions to general epidemiology methods and the field of causal inference,” said Andrew Olshan, PhD, Barbara S. Hulka Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the Gillings School. “The Department is very pleased that his contributions to our discipline have garnered such a high-profile honor.”

Cole will attend the ACE annual meeting in Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 26-29, to accept the award in person and address the ACE membership.

He plans to present a talk on “Risk,” a paper he co-authored that seeks to define the foundational parameters of transitions between states of health and disease. The full article was published online Feb. 5 by the American Journal of Epidemiology.

“I am honored to be recognized for my work by the American College of Epidemiology,” Cole said. “What I have accomplished is due largely to my teachers, students, colleagues and family.”
