Characklis invited to attend National Academy of Sciences event
November 3, 2014
Greg Characklis, PhD, professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been invited to participate in the U.S. Kavli Frontiers of Science symposium, the National Academy of Science’s premiere activity for distinguished young scientists.
Attendees are selected by a committee of Academy members from among young researchers who already have made recognized contributions to science. Selected attendees include recipients of major national fellowships and awards and those who have been identified as future leaders in science.
Characklis, whose research involves developing new approaches for managing the nation’s water resources through the integration of engineering and economic principles, leads a team that this year was awarded a $2.2 million National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Agriculture grant. The funding is for an interdisciplinary project to develop innovative strategies to sustainably meet future water demands in the Southeastern U.S.
Since the inception of the Academy’s Frontiers of Science symposium 26 years ago, more than 170 of its alumni have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and 10 have been awarded Nobel Prizes.
The symposium will be held at the Academy’s Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, Calif., Nov. 16-19.
