Bartram chosen for lifetime achievement award by UK university

Jamie Bartram, PhD, Don and Jennifer Holzworth Distinguished Professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and director of the School’s Water Institute at UNC, has been selected for a Lifetime Achievement Award by leaders at his alma mater, the University of Surrey, in Guildford, Surrey, U.K.

Bartram earned bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from the university.
He has been a faculty member at the Gillings School since 2009, when he was invited to be The Water Institute’s founding director. In that role, he has overseen the Institute’s development and growth, while establishing three internationally respected annual water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) conferences and maintaining his own formidable research, which brought in more than 100 grants and awards totalling more than $15.2 million.
He also developed and taught four new courses, and has mentored 25 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students to graduation, with 10 current advisees, ranging from undergraduate to postdoctoral researchers.
From 1998 to 2009, Bartram worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, primarily serving as WHO’s coordinator of water, sanitation and health and of its Assessing and Managing Environmental Risks to Health unit.
In 2004, he was elected chair of the United Nations (UN)-Water, a body that ensures coherence and coordination in the U.N.’s action on water and water-related issues, a position in which he served until 2006.
In 2004, he also was awarded the International Water Association ‘Grand Award’ for international leadership in the development and application of evidence-based policy and good practice.
Felix Dodds, adjunct professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the UNC Gillings School, has written extensively on water, climate, environmental security and other related topics.
“[Bartram’s] work to improve the lives of disadvantaged populations through improving water, sanitation and hygiene has impacted on developed and developing countries worldwide,” Dodds wrote in his letter of nomination for the award.
