Mike Newton-Ward, MSW, MPH, alumnus and adjunct assistant instructor in the Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Public Health Leadership Program, was recognized recently for outstanding contributions to social marketing.

Newton-Ward accepted the inaugural marketing award at the fifth annual World Social Marketing Conference, held May 16-17, in Washington, D.C.

“Social marketing” refers to the use of marketing principles to support individual and social change that promotes societal well-being.

A 1986 graduate in maternal and child health, Newton-Ward has taught the Public Health Leadership Program’s “Public Health in Social Marketing” course for almost a decade and has worked in the field of social marketing for 20 years.

He has consulted with state, federal and international governmental and nonprofit organizations to incorporate a social marketing approach into their work and has conducted training and made numerous conference presentations on social marketing.

Newton-Ward has reviewed and contributed to social marketing textbooks and journals and is on the editorial board of Social Marketing Quarterly. He is a founding member of both the International Social Marketing Association and the Social Marketing Association of North America.

Now retired after 31 years with the North Carolina Division of Public Health and other human service programs, Newton-Ward works as a part-time contractor at RTI International.
