Faculty and staff members at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health have contributed $68,366 to the 2009 State Employees’ Combined Campaign, says Cathy Padgett, career services coordinator for the Department of Health Policy and Management and this year’s SECC campaign chair at the School.

The public health school’s total was $9,500 more than last year’s, with every department and unit increasing their giving, even in an economically tempestuous year.

“We had incredible team captains in place this year who were able to motivate their departments,” Padgett said.

“As a result, despite its being a tough economic year, the faculty and staff stepped up and showed just how supportive they could be.”

University-wide, employees donated $814,816, only slightly shy of the $825,000 goal.

“One of the best things about our School is the generosity of the people who work here,” said David Potenziani, PhD, senior associate dean.

“Across the School, our faculty and staff pledged far more through the SECC than in previous years, perhaps because the needs are so much greater this year. Our community lives and gives as good neighbors in North Carolina and across the globe.”

Departmental and unit leaders for the campaign, pictured at left, included Deborah Williams (ESE), Deborah McGee (NCIPH), Erin Marcinowski (MCH), Padgett (School), Chantal Donaghy (PHLP), Gina Coffin-Smith (HPM), Laura Pearson (HBHE) and Melissa Hobgood (BIOS).

Unit leaders not pictured here include Gretchen Van Vliet (DO), Rhonda Turner (Environmental Health and Susceptibility), Vicki Moore (EPI), Jon Mozes (NUTR), Brandi Childers (NRI), and Joe Diconcilio (IIS).

Established in 1984 by executive order of Gov. James B. Hunt, the SECC is the only workplace charitable program that allows employees to give through payroll deduction. State employees may choose to donate to more than 900 nonprofit organizations at the local, national and international levels.
