Jessie Satia, PhD, MPH, will return to the School of Public Health on Jan. 1, 2006, as Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition and Special Assistant to the Dean for Diversity. Dr. Satia served on the UNC-Chapel Hill faculty from January 2002 to April 2004 as Assistant Professor of Nutrition. From April 2004 to December 2005, she was a Cancer Epidemiologist at Amgen Inc. in Thousand Oaks, California.Dean Barbara K. Rimer has said that the School of Public Health must become more diverse in terms of its students, faculty and staff.

“Becoming more diverse will help us become even better teachers, researchers and practitioners as we seek to overcome health-related disparities,” Rimer said. “When diversity is everyone’s business, sadly, it often is nobody’s job. By attracting a person of Dr. Satia’s caliber, an accomplished teacher and researcher, we can make important strides in facing one of the most important challenges before us today. Attracting Jessie back to Carolina is an important step. I look forward to working with her.”

Satia received a BS in Microbiology in 1991, an MS in Laboratory Medicine in 1994, an MPH in Epidemiology in 1998 and a PhD in Nutritional Epidemiology in 1999, all from the University of Washington at Seattle.

In her capacity as Special Assistant to the Dean for Diversity, Dr. Satia will develop strategies to increase diversity in the student, faculty and staff populations. She will work with individuals, departments, groups and alumni to identify issues and strategies focused on recruitment, retention, mentoring, financial aid and ensuring a positive climate of support for ethnic and racial minorities, as well as other under-represented populations.

She also is a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
