Dr. William L. Roper, dean of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine and chief executive officer of the UNC Health Care System, will kick off the UNC Program on Health Outcomes’ spring seminar series on Friday, January 20.Roper founded the health outcomes program while he was dean of UNC’s School of Public Health. He will present “Improving Health Care Quality: National Policy and Local Practice” at 3:30 p.m. in room 2301 of McGavran-Greenberg Hall. “We are delighted to have Dr. Roper as our first speaker for the 2006 series,” said Dr. Morris Weinberger, Vergil N. Slee distinguished professor of healthcare quality management in the School of Public Health’s department of health policy and administration and director of the Program on Health Outcomes.

“His vast experience and broad perspective make him uniquely qualified to discuss local and national initiatives to improve the quality of care.”

The UNC Program on Health Outcomes is a universitywide initiative whose purpose is to improve health outcomes through research and evidence-based education and practice. It is partially supported by a grant from Pfizer Inc. Roper, who also is vice chancellor for medical affairs at UNC, was dean of UNC’s School of Public Health for seven years before becoming CEO of the health-care system in 2004. He also has led the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and served as president of the Prudential Center for Health Care Research.

A native of Alabama, Roper began his career in public health in his home state in 1977 as a county health officer. He served as a White House Fellow in 1982-83, then spent the next seven years in a variety of key positions in Washington, D.C., including, among others, administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration, the federal agency that oversees Medicare and Medicaid; director of the White House Office of Policy Development; and deputy assistant to the president for domestic policy.

The second installment in the series will be Feb. 3. The featured speakers will be Dr. William H. Campbell, a professor in the UNC School of Pharmacy’s Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy and former dean of the school; and K.T.L. Vaughan, a librarian for bioinformatics and pharmacy within UNC’s Health Sciences Library and a clinical assistant professor in the School of Pharmacy.
