Barbara K. Rimer, DrPH, dean of the University of North Carolina School of Public Health and Alumni Distinguished Professor in its Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, is co-editor of the current issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The July 2008 supplement (Vol 35, Issue 1) of the prominent journal, devoted to cancer screening and the translation of cancer research into practice in the community, is titled “Increasing Screening for Breast, Cervical and Colorectal Cancers.”

Rimer and two other faculty members affiliated with the School of Public Health – Cathy Melvin, PhD, and Alexis Moore, MPH – contributed to eight of the ten articles in the issue.

Melvin is research associate professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health and at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Moore, an alumna of the School, is a lecturer at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The involvement of Rimer, Moore and Melvin in this special issue of the journal reflects the strong track record of School of Public Health investigators in cancer control research, evidence reviews and dissemination of research into practice.

“As a public university,” Rimer said, “we are especially committed to distill what is learned and to sharing what is effective with practitioners.”

Abstracts of the articles are available on the AJPM website; registered readers also may access the complete text.
