Dr. Luz Reyes

Heathe Luz McNaughton Reyes, PhD, 2009 alumna in health behavior and health education at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has received the Greenberg Award for Excellence in Doctoral Research. The award carries a $2,500 prize.

An abstract of Reyes’ dissertation paper, “Adolescent Alcohol Use and Dating Violence Perpetration: Three Studies Examining Concurrent and Longitudinal Relations across Grades 8 through 12,” is available online.

“Luz completed an outstanding dissertation which was rigorous and sophisticated in terms of theory, methodology and statistical approach,” said Vangie Foshee, PhD, chair of Reyes’ dissertation committee and professor of health behavior and health education at the School.

Foshee said that Reyes’ research findings “are germane to the prevention of a significant public health problem, dating violence among youth. It was an absolute pleasure to work with such a scholar as Luz as she carried out this important research.”

Reyes, who plans to use the award to support her research on the etiology and prevention of teen dating violence, is now a postdoctoral health behavior and health education fellow at UNC.

“I’m thrilled to have been selected to receive the Greenberg Dissertation Award and am so grateful to donors for their generous support of doctoral research in public health,” Reyes said. “I’m particularly proud to share in this honor with my dissertation committee members and my department, which has provided me with a phenomenal doctoral training experience.”

Members of Reyes’ dissertation committee included, in addition to Foshee, J. Michael Bowling, PhD, research associate professor, and Susan Ennett, PhD, professor, in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education; Daniel Bauer, PhD, associate professor of psychology; and Carolyn Halpern, PhD, associate professor of maternal and child health.

The Greenberg Award, funded through an endowment in the Department of Biostatistics, was first presented in May 1983.
