What is SPH2020?

At UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, we anticipate the future so we can accelerate positive changes in the public’s health. We are committed that, in 2020, our departments will continue to be known for their excellence, the School will be a center for public health innovation, a hub solving big public health challenges across North Carolina and around the world, and one of the best places in the world to work, learn about and advance public health.
We are not just going to let the future happen. We are going to create it. “Rather than having 20/20 hindsight, we want to exercise 20/20 foresight,” Dean Barbara Rimer said.
That’s what SPH2020 is about. We are going to imagine and express our future and develop an action plan to achieve the future picture. Departments and other units are integral parts of the School’s picture. “We” includes faculty, staff, students, alumni, members of our leadership boards and others who care about our School.
“As we look ahead, we must have sharp goals and clear priorities,” Rimer said. “We cannot do everything, but we want to do everything we do well. That takes imagination, innovation, knowledge, fortitude and planning.” The School’s leadership is committed to this effort as part of the essential foundation for our continued excellence.
Steve Sloate, MBA, adjunct associate professor of health policy and management and president of Cirra Inc., is helping the School undertake the process.
We will set up a space off the atrium of the Michael Hooker Research Center and a website for you to share ideas and respond to others’ contributions. We’ll send more information about participating soon. The four components of the overall planning process include:
  • Develop a future picture of 2020.
  • Identify critical questions and issues for the future.
  • Prepare white papers.
  • Create, implement and monitor the plan.
This process will be stimulating, interactive and enjoyable.  Please join us!
