About

Dr. Antonia Bennett is a health services researcher and patient-reported outcomes methodologist. Her research investigates valid and reliable approaches for assessing patient-reported outcomes in longitudinal studies, in particular symptoms, physical function and quality of life. Her current work is assessing the financial hardship of patients and families.  She is also studying the ability of people with cognitive impairment to complete patient-reported outcome measures of various complexity.


Dr. Bennett provides scientific leadership on the development and use of patient-reported outcome measures in oncology, dementia, and other serious illness care research. She is Faculty Director of the UNC Patient-Reported Outcomes Core (PRO Core), and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.  Dr. Bennett serves on the Executive Committee of the Person and Caregiver Relevant Outcomes Core of the NIA IMPACT Collaboratory which provides scientific guidance on the conduct of embedded pragmatic clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. From 2019-2022, she served on the Board of Directors for the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL).

Research Activities

•    Outcomes assessment in serious illness care research, with a focus in oncology and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias
•    Implementation of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and other forms of patient-generated health data (PGHD) in clinical practice and clinical trials
•    Survey methodology; and strategies for electronic administration of PRO
•    Analysis of longitudinal PRO data
•    Qualitative research and psychometrics for the validation of PROs
