PHLP student, alumnus lead award-winning county health department
The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) has named the Gaston County (NC) Department of Health and Human Services as one of three 2013 Local Health Departments of the Year. Chris Dobbins, a 2009 alumnus of the Public Health Leadership Program (PHLP), is interim director of the Gaston County health department. Steve Eaton, the deputy health director there, is currently a Leadership Certificate student in the PHLP.
The three nation-wide winners, one in each size category (Small, Medium and Large), were selected upon review of applications from across the country. The other LHD’s recognized were Crook County, Oregon (population served: under 50,000) and Denver (population served: over 500,000).
All three finalists, according to NACCHO’s website, “showed creativity, innovation, sufficient evidence of outcomes and impact on the community, and collaboration with partners, community and key stakeholders.”
