CHAPEL HILL – New opportunities for partnerships between the fields of public health and information and library sciences will be the topic of a lecture Wednesday (May 4) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Dr. Barbara K. Rimer, Alumni Distinguished Professor in the UNC School of Public Health, will give the free, public talk from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Wilson Library. A reception will follow.

Titled “Books, Bytes and Bugs,” the talk will be this year’s Henderson Lecture presented by the UNC School of Information and Library Science.

Rimer, who will become dean of the School of Public Health on June 1, will discuss trends in health care and health information that suggest collaboration between the two fields. She will focus primarily on patients and the public in an information-rich environment.

A behavioral scientist, Rimer is deputy director for population sciences at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. She previously directed the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences for the National Cancer Institute, one of the National Institutes of Health. She is vice chair of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Task Force for Community Prevention Services.

Rimer has edited four books and written more than 200 journal articles. Among her many honors was the Healthtrac Foundation’s 2004 Health Education Award, for a U.S. health educator who has made a substantial contribution to advancing the field through research, program development or program delivery.

The annual Henderson Lecture was established in 1990 to honor the memory of Lucile Kelling Henderson, faculty member (1932-1960) and dean (1954-1960) of what was then the School of Library Science. For more information, contact Wanda Monroe at 919-843-8337 or wmonroe@email.unc.edu.
