Dr. Jon Oberlander

Jonathan Oberlander, PhD, one of the nation’s leading experts on health care politics and policy, will host a live Facebook chat at 12 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, Nov. 8 to discuss how the results of today’s elections will affect health care in general and the Affordable Care Act (also called “the health care law” or “ObamaCare”) in particular.

Oberlander is professor of health policy and management at Gillings School of Global Public Health at The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and of social medicine at UNC’s School of Medicine. He also holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Political Science. His research interests include health care politics and policy, health care reform, Medicare, American politics and public policy.

Oberlander is author of The Political Life of Medicare (University of Chicago Press, 2003). He is also co-editor of the 3-volume series The Social Medicine Reader, 2nd ed. (Duke University Press, 2005). His articles have appeared in The New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Health Affairs, Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law, and Law & Contemporary Problems.

His writings have examined topics ranging from Medicare’s prescription drug benefit to lessons from past health reform episodes and the fight over renewing the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Oberlander currently is working on a book project on the politics of health reform. He is also working on a series of articles about cost control and health reform during the Obama administration.
