Students from the UNC Nutrition Coalition recently gave a hands-on presentation to youngsters and their families at Durham’s Museum of Life and Science, introducing them to some ideas about healthy eating and teaching them to make healthy snacks. Coalition co-president Mia Chabot, Megan Dean, Stephanie Lu, Michelle Tulley and Becca Wright took part in the second annual Kids in the Kitchen program at the museum, which is sponsored by the Junior League of Durham and Orange counties. About 450 children had the chance to see and talk about vegetables, taste them, and practice including them in recipes. The Nutrition Coalition is a student organization at the School of Public Health that works to promote healthy lifestyles on campus and in the community through volunteer social and educational activities. More than 19 percent of children in North Carolina are overweight. School of Public Health contact: Ramona DuBose, director of communications, (919) 966-7467 or ramona_dubose@unc.edu. |
