This form is for recording notes from Advising Meetings between Nutrition students and their faculty mentors.
Suggested Advising Questions for MPH Students
Below are suggested questions you may ask during an advising session with your faculty mentor. Students should meet with their faculty mentor at least once per semester and are not required to use the questions below. These are only meant to help facilitate the meeting. Students should take notes when they meet with their faculty mentor using the web form found here.
Year One
Fall
- Get to know your faculty mentor and tell them about yourself
- Things to ask about include:
- Educational/Career/Research Background
- What brought them to UNC
- Things to tell them about yourself:
- How did you come to pursue nutrition?
- Where do you see yourself working?
- What Certificate Programs, if any, interest you? Discuss these with your academic coordinator too
- Discuss how your classes are going and what you plan to take in the spring
- Ask for suggestions on elective courses based on your interest – fall of year 2 is a good time to take one
- Are there any resources or support services you need?
Spring
- Discuss how your fall classes went and how you’re currently doing.
- Discuss what you plan to do (or hope to do, if you’re not yet sure) for your placements for the summer.
- Talk through any concerns you are having thus far.
- What have been the most meaningful experiences you’ve had in the program thus far? How have these changed your interests within the field, if at all?
- Discuss your fall class schedule
- Are there any resources or support services you need?
Year Two
Fall
- Discuss how your summer placements went
- What were your most important “take aways” from your placements? How did the experience impact your interests and career goals?
- Discuss how your classes are going. Are there any resources or support services you need?
- Where do you see yourself working once you complete the program? What career advice does your faculty mentor have for you?
Spring
- Discuss how your fall classes went and how you’re currently doing.
- Discuss what you plan to do (or hope to do, if you’re not yet sure) for your summer placements.
- Discuss a timeline for applying to jobs and/or other career advice with your faculty mentor.
- Are there any resources or support services you need?
