Nineteen receive global health graduate certificates

The certificate program, administered by the School of Public Health’s Office of Global Health, prepares UNC residential graduate students to work in changing environments and with diverse populations around the world.

The certificate complements currently enrolled graduate students’ departmental requirements by offering courses, seminars, and fieldwork or internships that provide for a comprehensive understanding of global health conditions, needs and solutions in developing and industrialized areas.

Students gain competence in identifying and analyzing factors that generate disparities in health status, health resources and access to health information and health services, particularly for ethnic minorities and other marginalized and vulnerable population groups.

Requirements for the program include:

• Five graduate-level courses with global health content (10 credit hours), including a foundation course and the two-semester Global Health Discussion Series
• A master’s paper with a global health focus
• Regular attendance at local global health-related events

An internship or field placement related to global health is also strongly recommended.

Now in its fifth year, the program has trained almost 100 students, many of whom currently work in global health organizations including Family Health International, Ipas, RTI International, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Population Services International, and at global health offices at Duke University, University of North Carolina and other educational institutions.

The School of Public Health’s Office of Global Health serves as the coordinating unit for the School’s global health activities.
