New UNC Summer Public Health Fellowship Program seeks diverse applicants

The Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is now taking applications for its exciting new program, the UNC Summer Public Health Fellowship Program (SPHF). Designed to increase the likelihood that more disadvantaged and minority students with academic potential pursue careers in public health, the program will enroll a diverse group of 35 college students from North Carolina and other states to explore public health concepts and careers for eight weeks at the University’s Chapel Hill campus. All qualified students, however, are welcome to apply.
“As a beneficiary of a similar program, I understand firsthand the value of experiences that open new horizons for students and encourage them to pursue their aspirations,” said Felicia Mebane, PhD, assistant dean for student affairs. “We are very excited to have a program in the School that will identify promising students from diverse communities, support their growth and connect them to our disciplines and programs.” The new program will also provide administrative support for similar departmental programs, and the Biostatistics Summer Undergraduate Research Education (BSURE) program will become part of SPHF. As SPHF fellows, BSURE students will participate in SPHF workshops in addition to the biostatistics classes and research experiences that BSURE focuses on. Although SPHF is administered by the School’s Office of Student Affairs, its success will depend on partnerships with faculty, staff, students and alumni throughout the School and beyond. For example, faculty, staff and alumni will support workshops on public health concepts and other topics and help SPHF fellows connect with externship placements, and public health graduate students will work closely with the fellows. The program administrators hope that everyone in the School community will encourage students to apply to SPHF and BSURE. If you are interested in supporting this program, please contact Mrs. Candice Powell, interim SPHF coordinator. Located in 267 Rosenau Hall, in office space provided by the Minority Student Caucus, Powell can also be reached at unc-sphf@unc.edu.
