The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Department of Maternal and Child Health has announced an online certificate program available to working public health professionals. The Certificate in Maternal and Child Health Leadership is designed to provide practitioners with core knowledge, skills and competencies for promoting the health of women and children in domestic and global settings.

Completed applications originally were due by Nov. 2, but the deadline for submissions has been extended to Monday, Nov. 30.

“A major emphasis of the program,” says Marcia Roth, MPH, director of training initiatives in the maternal and child health department,” is on the evaluation of population-based solutions to complex health problems in maternal and child health, with ‘maternal and child health’ being defined in the broadest sense to include physical, political, economic, cultural, and psychosocial factors.”

The three-course, 10-credit-hour program of study is intended to build field leadership in addressing health disparities in maternal and child health and in defining a population-based vision for improving health and well-being of women, children, youth and their families.

While specifically designed for distance education students, certificate courses are equivalent to those available to residential master’s degree students in the School’s Department of Maternal and Child Health. Students are required to make one three-and-a-half-day visit to the UNC campus for an onsite orientation and leadership-intensive workshop on January 3-6, 2010. All other coursework can be completed via the Internet.

It is expected that all enrolled students will complete the 10-credit course of study by August 2010.

More information, including the application form, is available online.
