CHAPEL HILL — A new maternal and child health textbook authored by many faculty, students and alumni of the UNC School of Public Health, was recently published by Jones and Bartlett Publishers, Inc.The second edition of “Maternal and Child Health: Programs, Problems, and Policy in Public Health,” edited by Dr. Jonathan Kotch, professor and associate chair for graduate studies in UNC’s Department of Maternal and Child Health, provides an overview of the issues and extent of maternal and child health services in the United States.

This new edition includes new chapters on oral health, global health, and advocacy and policy development in maternal and child health. It also covers new topics such as the epidemic of obesity, the consequences of the implementation of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), efforts to reduce mother-to-child transmission of AIDS, and new interventions for child health improvements.

The 704-page textbook is already in use in various maternal and child health classes around the county. It can be purchased at UNC bookstores as well as www.amazon.com and www.bn.com.

UNC Department of Maternal Child Health authors include Dr. Trude Bennett, associate professor; Dr. Shelah Bloom, research assistant professor; Dr. Sian Curtis, research associate professor; Dr. Anita Farel, clinical professor; Dr. Vijaya Hogan, clinical associate professor; Dr. Lewis Margolis, associate professor; Dr. C. Arden Miller, professor and chair emeritus; Dr. Herbert Peterson, professor and chair; Dr. Janice Dodds, professor of maternal and child health and nutrition; Elizabeth Sutherland, a doctoral student; and Theresa Chapple, a master’s student.

Other authors include Dr. Barbara Laraia, research assistant professor in UNC’s Department of Nutrition; former faculty members from UNC’s Department of Maternal and Child Health: Dr. Dorothy Browne, Dr. Mary People-Sheps, Dr. Milton Kotelchuck, Dr. Joseph Telfair, Dr. Amy Tsui, and Dr. Cecilia Zapata; and UNC maternal and child health alumni Dr. George Cole, David Knopf, Linda Piccinino, and Dr. Anjel Vahratian.
