Janet Place, director of the Southeast Public Health Training Center, part of the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s N.C. Institute for Public Health, has received an award for Best Leadership Project at the Southeast Public Health Leadership Institute (SEPHLI) meeting, held recently in Winston-Salem, N.C. Her project was titled “Workforce Development Roadmap.” In her role at the center, Place has designed new approaches to enhance training, education and competency-based learning among public health practitioners. Her collaborations with the Public Health Foundation, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration’s Public Health Training Center Network and academics and practitioners from around the country helped develop the national Tier 1 Core Public Health Competencies for public health professionals at entry level and without a Master of Public Health degree. These competencies will be used to create a roadmap for professional development by more clearly defining expected levels of proficiency. This will help employers determine how to better assess their employees, provide training and build career ladders.SEPHLI is a year-long leadership development program at the N.C. Institute for Public Health that offers unique opportunities for leadership growth in the public health workforce. For more information, visit the SEPHLI website.
