On November 22, 2013, John Graham, NCIPH senior investigator, received the Empower Award from the North Carolina Research & Education Network (NCREN). In 2008, NCREN introduced the Empower Award to recognize individuals who have not been long-time members of the Community but have made an immediate impact in their support of NCREN during the course of their engagement. Empower Award recipients are selected by MCNC with input from the NCREN Community. Dr. Graham was selected for his work on the North Carolina Telehealth Network (NCTN). NCTN is a dedicated broadband network intended to provide economical, reliable, high-speed networking access to public, non-profit healthcare providers including North Carolina’s local health departments, free clinics, and non-profit hospitals, particularly those in rural parts of the state. With Dr. Graham’s guidance the NCTN pilot phase has been completed, and the new permanent program is underway. NCTN is expected to provide access to thousands of providers across North Carolina.
