National public health consultant to speak at health professions forum

Michael E. Bird, the first American Indian to serve as president of the American Public Health Association and a national public health consultant, will be the featured speaker at an upcoming health professions forum to be held on the UNC campus.The April 8 forum, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building, will be free to area undergraduates and faculty members. Registration is required.
Nearly 150 undergraduate students from North Carolina are expected to attend. Bird, the 2006 “Inspirational Speakers in Science” lecturer, will present “Passion, Thought, Action” to motivate aspiring health professionals to overcome obstacles and pursue careers in health care. He will use his life story to urge minority young people to set goals for themselves and be persistent in overcoming obstacles. The health professions forum and lecture are part of the Health Professions Preparation Program sponsored by the N.C. Health Careers Access Program at UNC. Co-sponsors for the event are the N.C. Area Health Education Centers Program (based in UNC’s School of Medicine), the N.C. Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and the UNC School of Medicine’s Office of Educational Development-Special Programs.
