Munroe-Blum to speak at 2008 School of Public Health commencement

Heather Munroe-Blum, principal and vice chancellor of McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and a Carolina School of Public Health alumna, will give the commencement address for the School’s graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 10, at 5 pm. in Memorial Hall on the UNC campus. Born in Montreal, Munroe-Blum received a doctorate with distinction in epidemiology from UNC’s School of Public Health in 1983. Before coming to McGill, she served at the University of Toronto as professor, governor, dean of social work, and finally as vice president for research and international relations (1994 to 2002). She also has taught at York and McMaster universities. She joined the McGill faculty in 2003 as vice chancellor and professor of epidemiology and biostatistics. Munroe-Blum is recognized for her leadership and commitment to advancing McGill’s international standing in research, graduate education, service and student experience. The establishment of her Principal’s Task Force on Student Life and Learning received high praise for enhancing university life for many of McGill’s 33,000 students. Recipient of numerous honors and awards, Munroe-Blum was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003 for her outstanding record of achievements in science, innovation and higher education policy. She holds numerous honorary degrees from Canadian and international universities and is a Specially Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. “I am thrilled that Dr. Munroe-Blum has accepted our invitation to be the 2008 commencement speaker,” said Dean Barbara K. Rimer. “As a highly accomplished alumna of the School of Public Health, she has shown the true value of a Carolina education.
