Spotlight: La-Sonya F. Robinson
“I’ve never been happier in a job in my 20 years of work experience,” says La-Sonya Robinson. “I feel more connected than ever here – with the culture and mission of the department, the work, and the people.”
Nearly two years ago, the Anderson, SC native left a position in Clemson University’s business office to join the Department of Maternal and Child Health at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health as an accounting technician. Robinson describes the move as a “most peaceful professional transition,” crediting the supportive leadership and collegial environment of the department. She embraces the opportunity to learn and grow, stating that every change brings a chance to gain new skills and experiences. Robinson is eager to foster collaboration, demonstrate accountability, and act as a voice for the department. She also has plans to pursue an additional degree in finance to further her career.
“La-Sonya has a listening ear and is always willing to assist when needed, using every opportunity to learn and grow in the finance world.” says Kia Barbee, Director of Finance and Administration for MCH. Barbee emphasizes Robinson’s dedication and unique skillset, which, combined with the strengths of the team, contribute to advancing the department’s finance initiatives. “I look forward to aiding in her growth as she continues to make an impact.”
Robinson’s commitment to the UNC community goes beyond her accounting role. She prepped an MCH Department trivia team for the School’s Winter Holiday Celebration and has served as captain for the Office of State Human Resources Miles for Wellness Challenge, a statewide initiative encouraging daily movement among state employees. She highlights healthy competition, camaraderie, and the healthcare benefits of movement as key motivators for her involvement. Additionally, Robinson has contributed to the UNC School of Medicine’s Community Research Board for the Age-Based Genomic Screening program, as part of her dedication to community-oriented projects.
Outside of work, Robinson enjoys spending time with her two sons, crafting, and volunteering at her youngest son’s school. Her enthusiasm and commitment reflect the values of the Department of Maternal and Child Health and the wider Gillings community, making her an integral part of the team.
