Bio: Nkechi received her B.A. in International Studies with a concentration in political science and a minor in Spanish from UNC-Chapel Hill and La Universidad de Sevilla. Over the years, she participated in short-term medical and community service projects in Peru, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and South Africa. In 2008, Nkechi worked in South Africa for 9 months to assist the launch of a community development pilot program for local African leaders. She later pursued an M.A. in Global Policy Studies, specializing in international development at the University of Texas at Austin Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs (LBJ) in 2013.  During her time at LBJ, Nkechi volunteered as a graduate associate for the Open Aid research team with the Innovation for Peace and Development. Nkechi also worked with the Agency for Transformation in Uganda as a 2014 AidData Summer Fellow to support capacity building efforts among staff and local farmers in the area of government budget accountability.

Nkechi’s current research pursuits are at the intersection of MCH and behavioral health, addressing health disparities through evidence-based interventions. She seeks to examine strategies addressing MCH challenges among underserved populations locally and abroad, identify gaps in implementation, and design and evaluate MCH interventions. Nkechi is particularly interested in the ecological complexities that influence maternal health behavior and outcomes.

Outside of school, Nkechi enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter. She is a foodie, a lover of books and music, and passionate about people and cultures.
