Dana Loomis, MS, MSPH, PhD, has been named interim chair of the UNC-CH School of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology.

“I am delighted that Dr. Loomis agreed to serve as interim chair,” said Dean Barbara K. Rimer. “We have one of the top two epidemiology departments in the country – and I would easily rate it number one! Such strength never comes only from the chair, but from the collective strength of the entire department. Dana has an outstanding track record, and he will be an excellent leader during the search for a permanent chair.”

Dr. Loomis, Professor of Epidemiology and Environmental Sciences & Engineering, has been a member of the School’s faculty since 1989. His research and teaching interests cover a spectrum of occupational and environmental health topics, with recent projects on cancer risks among asbestos textile workers, injuries and musculoskeletal disorders among commercial fishermen, prevention of workplace violence, and the effect of measurement error in Poisson regression models.

He holds a PhD in Epidemiology and a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences & Engineering, both from UNC and has over 100 peer-reviewed publications with contributions to the literature on occupational cancer, air pollution, injuries and methods for exposure assessment and data analysis.

In addition to his research and academic duties, Dr. Loomis is Deputy Editor of the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine and serves on the editorial boards of four other scientific journals published in the United States, Brazil, Spain and Chile. He is past Chair of the Safety and Occupational Health Study Section, which advises NIOSH and NIH on occupational health research.

Dr. Loomis will lead the department while the School searches for a chair to succeed Dr. David Savitz, Ph.D., who has accepted at position at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine as Director of the Center of Excellence in Epidemiology and Disease Prevention as as Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine, where he will also be the Charles W. Bluhdorn Professor Community and Preventive Medicine.
