Radio station WCHL 1360 honored Cheryll Lesneski, DrPH, and Beth Lamanna with the Village Pride Award on Feb. 7 for planning a medical mission trip to help Gulf Coast residents affected by Hurricane Katrina.Lesneski is an assistant professor in the School of Public Health, and Lamanna is a clinical instructor for the School of Nursing. Lamana is also affiliated with the North Carolina Institute for Public Health, the service arm of the School of Public Health.

Volunteer students and faculty from the schools of public health and nursing will travel to the the Mississippi towns of Ocean Springs, Biloxi and Long Beach to provide care to those displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers will staff medical clinics, community work crews, a distribution center and a food kitchen. The trip will take place during UNC’s spring break in March.

The schools are seeking additional volunteers from the university and surrounding community to join the trip.
