Kyle Messier, PhD candidate in Dr. Marc Serre’s lab, was also selected as a 2013 recipient of the UNC Graduate Education Advancement (GAEB) Impact Award.

 
Kyle’s research has focused on integrating multiple GIS methods to estimate tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in North Carolina groundwater. His research integrated geocoding, land-use regression modeling, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and geostatistics to model PCE across the state.
 
According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), PCE is a likely human carcinogen and has been used in dry-cleaning and metal degreasing operations. Kyle’s work will provide a more cost-effective and efficient method for NC decision-makers to estimate the concentration of contaminants in the environment.
