Gary Kueber, an MPH alumnus of the Public Health Leadership Program, recently received one of five Citizen Awards from the Independent Weekly. Kueber was honored for his blog, Endangered Durham, which helps galvanize citizens to protect and preserve vital properties in the city.

The paper has given out the Citizen Awards annually since 1983, honoring people and groups “whose activism has positively impacted their communities, whether it’s one neighborhood, a city or several counties.”

Kueber founded his blog to argue against the demolition of historic properties in Durham. “On the site,” the paper notes in an article on the award, “Kueber mixes fascinating histories of houses that no longer exist–and the biographies of their notable tenants–with up-to-the-minute reporting, mapping and data. As a result, readers are confronted with an invaluable–if troubling–perspective.”
