Bradley King

Bradley King, a Master of Public Health student at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has received the Michiko Kuno Award for Excellence in Student Research. The award, presented Jan. 27 as part of the UNC School of Medicine’s John B. Graham Medical Student Research Day, recognized King’s research on diabetic retinopathy screening.

King is a health care and prevention student in the public health school’s Public Health Leadership Program and has completed his third year of medical school at UNC.

Diane Calleson, PhD, clinical associate professor in the Public Health Leadership Program, praised King’s passion for his research topic.

“Students in the seminar are asked to explain why they want to invest in the area of public health they have chosen to research,” Calleson said. “Bradley’s response was telling: ‘Because this can help those who need it most,’ he said. ‘The growing prevalence of diabetes, especially in minority populations, must be met with innovative solutions to combat disparities and barriers to access. Screening for diabetic retinopathy via telemedicine at the primary care office helps to lower the barriers to access.'”The Kuno Award is presented annually to recognize an outstanding public health research poster on exhibit at the medical school’s student research day. The award selection is made by UNC faculty members.

Michiko Kuno was the wife of former UNC professor of physiology and internationally distinguished neuroscientist, Dr. Motoy Kuno. Friends established the award in her honor.
