ecree is an online tool, available to all students enrolled in SPHG 713. It provides automatic real-time feedback on writing assignments.

Getting started

You’ll need to go through five steps to use ecree for writing assignments:

  1. Create your ecree account
Visit https://www.ecree.com/signup and create a student account.
  2. Enroll in your course
Enter the course enrollment token you receive from your instructor into the My Classes field. This can be accessed from your drop down menu once you’re logged into the ecree website.
    a. Residential MPH and MPH Asheville students: You’ll receive this via email, in Sakai announcements, or in your class session
    b. MPH@UNC students: You’ll get this via email and on your course wall

  3. Draft your writing assignment
You can upload a document or write directly in the ecree interface. Watch video instructions for using ecree. Use the colored feedback and videos to improve your writing.
Note: When footnotes and citations aren’t in separate paragraphs, they get flagged as writing problem by ecree. If your footnote is at the end of a sentence, you can use “Return” or “Enter” to make it a new paragraph, just like you would in Microsoft Word. Once you’ve put them in a new paragraph, you can remove or hide them by clicking the paragraph header to the left of the footnote

  4. Download your final version
Use the “download” (as .docx) button to download your final version from ecree. You can make final edits to prepare your writing assignment for submission.
  5. Upload for grading
Upload your final into the assignment submission portion of your learning management system.
    a. Residential MPH and MPH Asheville students: Sakai Assignment Submission Instructions
    b. MPH@UNC students: Use the assignment tool in 2CH

Improving your writing by drafting your assignments in the system and making updates, based on immediate feedback.

Why should I use ecree?
Real-time feedback and practice are two foundations for improving writing quality. Students who use ecree get immediate instructor-quality feedback every time they use ecree. This leads to better drafts, higher scores, and significantly fewer dropped courses.

Is using ecree required?
No. While UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health has purchased an ecree account for you, using ecree is completely optional. We hope using ecree will help you improve your writing skills.

Does submitting an essay in ecree mean I’ve submitted my essay for grading in the course?
No. You need to submit your writing assignments for grading in the appropriate assignment in your learning management system. There is a “download” (as .docx) button to get a copy of your draft that you can upload to the learning management system.

What do I need to do to continue using ecree for my other courses after this term?
UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health has purchased a license for you to use for assignments in SPHG 713 during your first term. After your first term ends, you will still have access to your account, but won’t be able to modify or begin a new assignment unless you wish to purchase your own account.

If you wish to use ecree for your other courses, you can choose to pay a monthly or annual fee. Beginning a new assignment or modifying a draft will trigger the paywall that lets you sign up for the paid version.

I paid for a personal ecree account. What do I need to do to add assignments for myself?
When you click the “Start an essay” button, you will have two options:
1. Select a writing prompt from a course in which you are enrolled.
2. Type your question in at the top of the essay
