Overview: Students accepted into the MSPH-to-PhD Program have 3 years of coursework, receiving an MSPH after Year 2 and taking PhD comprehensive examinations after Year 3. This track provides a mechanism to admit promising PhD students who lack background and/or experience in public health/HSR/health policy.

Graduation Requirements: 

  • MSPH:  additional courses should be taken for a total of 60 hours during the first two years.
  • PhD: 9 hours/semester in Year 3.
  • PhD: HPM 994 in Fall Year 4.

Notes:

  • It is possible to take the PhD courses in other semesters than indicated above.
  • *HPM 871 – Seminar in Teaching Health Policy and Management is taken in the first semester the student serves as a Teaching Assistant.
  • PhD requires 15 hours in minor courses plus at least one 3-hour graduate-level health policy course.
  • MSPH electives can include PhD required courses, such as concentration minor courses and a policy course.
