The Applied Nature of our Curriculum

Students in our program participate in a variety of projects that allow them to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real-world problems in the field of public health and health care. Below are some examples of student projects:

Sample of Service Learning Projects from HPM 330: Introduction to Health Organization Leadership, Management, and Behavior

A team of BSPH seniors worked in 2017-18 with the North Carolina Congress of Latino Organizations to improve health services for Limited English Proficiency patients across the state.
The team’s preceptors were Ivan Parra, Lead Organizer of the NCCLO, and Luzita Francis, an HPM MHA student and HPM BSPH 2017 alumna.

  • Planning and conducting a program evaluation of an initiative aimed at improving access to care for North Carolina residents (Community Care of North Carolina)
  • Conducting a focus group and market research to identify, adapt, and promote an evidence-based health promotion and disease prevention program to persons with disabilities (NC Office of Disabilities and Health)
  • Analyzing and making recommendations to clinical leaders on improving patient safety during handoffs (UNC Hospitals)
  • Planning a hypertension patient education program for low-income visitors to the Student Health Action Coalition free clinic in Carrboro (Student Health Action Coalition)
  • Conducting market research and developing a marketing plan for the potential expansion of the PACE program, which provides adult day care for seniors in their own homes (Piedmont Health Services)
