Health care and prevention student wins teaching award

Alexander Berger, master’s candidate in health care and prevention at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, received an undergraduate teaching assistant award April 11 from the Student Undergraduate Teaching and Staff Awards Committee. The award recognizes excellence in service, dedication to undergraduate students and a positive impact on a broad spectrum of students. Undergraduate students nominate and select the recipients for the awards, which are funded by undergraduate students.
Berger, honored for his work as a teaching assistant for the Department of Biology’s anatomy and physiology course, also guides first- and second-year medical students at the Student Health Action Coalition (SHAC) clinic in Carrboro, where many public health students volunteer.
“I have cherished the opportunity to teach UNC students and inspire them to pursue careers in health fields,” said Berger, who is also a student at the UNC School of Medicine.
“Alex truly cares about whether his students understand, not just grasp, the material presented in lab,” said Hsiao-Han (Sharon) Chen, an undergraduate intern in the anatomy and physiology laboratory who nominated Berger for the award. “He is genuinely invested in the students and utilizes different teaching methods that cater to students of all learning styles.”
Berger was honored at the Chancellor’s Awards Ceremony with a certificate and a $1,000 prize. He will complete his master’s degree this year and return to medical school in the fall.
The health care and prevention concentration is offered by the public health school through the Public Health Leadership Program. The concentration is designed specifically for medical students and physicians who desire training in population health and health care.
The Student Undergraduate Teaching and Staff Awards Committee was established in 1989 to recognize outstanding undergraduate instruction by both faculty and teaching assistants. In 2004 the awards were extended to include a staff award to recognize a staff member’s specific contributions to the undergraduate experience at Carolina.
