Elaine Lo, second-year Master of Public Health student in health behavior and health education (HBHE) at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been selected for the Graduate Education Diversity Internship Program, sponsored by the American Evaluation Association.

Lo is one of six awardees from a variety of disciplines selected for strong research skills, an interest in the field of evaluation and a commitment to engage in culturally responsive evaluation practice.

The Graduate Education Diversity Internship provides students with an opportunity to build skills and confidence by participating in real-world evaluation practices.

Lo will work on two YMCA national programs through Evaluation, Assessment and Policy Connections (EvAP) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Education. EvAP is a program that aims to improve evaluation capacity and effectiveness of public, nonprofit and private organizations.

“As I aspire to become a public health practitioner in global health, I hope the skills and knowledge I learn will transfer into identifying and evaluating successful interventions and policies that would reduce HIV/AIDS in mothers and children,” says Lo. “I would like to develop tools and policies that I can share with locals which will empower them to develop and evaluate programs that are beneficial to their communities.”

As part of the internship, Lo will travel to a fall seminar in Washington, D.C., attend the American Evaluation Association Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif., and participate in a three-day winter seminar at Claremont Graduate University, in Claremont, Calif. She also will attend the American Evaluation Association and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Summer Evaluation Institute to finalize project reporting, attend training workshops and participate in a graduation ceremony.
