Allan Steckler, a longtime HBHE professor who is well known for mentoring generations of international students, was recognized this fall with the 2005 Distinguished Service Award from the University Center for International Studies (UCIS). Specifically, he was cited for his “exemplary work” on behalf of the Undergraduate Health Fellowship, the Fulbright Student Program, and the Graduate Certificate in International Health. As one of his supporters put it, Allan’s exceptional dedication and productivity in these areas allowed UCIS to “carry out their work of bringing leadership, innovation, and coordination to the mission of extending the university’s international presence and global perspective work.”A highly regarded educator in and outside of the classroom, Allan regularly teaches two courses, one on qualitative research and evaluation, and another on social and behavioral interventions. In describing Allan’s teaching style, one student says “he seeks to empower students to listen to their subjects, challenge previously held assumptions, and think critically about public health issues.”

Formerly an Associate Dean for Global Health, Allan continues to be at the forefront of integrating global education issues into the research, practice, and teaching of the School. His international experience includes two years of service in Thailand with the Peace Corps. He will return to Thailand this December, where he will teach at the Mahidol University School of Public Health in Bangkok. He will also teach research methods at the Thamassat University School of Dentistry.

Said Allan on receiving the award, “I love my work with UCIS; it is very inspiring to meet undergraduates and graduates who have international interests.” Congratulations, Allan!
