Halpern praised for mentoring doctoral students

Carolyn Halpern, PhD, associate professor of maternal and child health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, received the UNC Graduate School’s Faculty Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring at the 2009 doctoral hooding ceremony on May 9. The award recognizes graduate faculty who provide outstanding support and guidance to their doctoral students. “Carolyn has been widely recognized for her numerous outstanding achievements as a scholar in maternal and child health,” said Herbert Peterson, MD, professor and chair of the department. “We are absolutely delighted that she has received this prestigious award for her great commitment to the success of our students.” Halpern joined the UNC faculty in 1998 as an assistant professor at the School and faculty fellow at the Carolina Population Center.
