While many of their colleagues were stuck indoors making final adjustments to their 1040 tax returns, eleven master’s and doctoral students from the Department of Nutrition were dashing off to Charlotte, N.C. The students were participants in the Charlotte Racefest Half Marathon on Saturday, April 14.

Those who completed the 13.1 mile race included Mia Chabot, Amy Dean, Megan Dean, Catherine Gang, Jennifer Hopkins, Stacy Moretz, Julie McClure, Andrea Nikolai, Kim Orleck, Carl Raetzsch, and Becca Wright. The group trained together for four months to prepare for the race.

“Our area of study is nutrition,” said team leader and organizer, Kim Orleck, “but we realize that nutrition is only one piece of a ‘healthy lifestyle.’ All the pieces — including physical activity — have to fit together to keep individuals healthy and happy. As soon-to-be health professionals, we wanted to role-model the importance of physical activity in a healthy life.”

Orleck will graduate on Saturday, May 12, with a master’s of public health in nutrition. Having led the group during her two years of study at the School, she has promised to return to run next year if the first-year students will keep the program active.

This is the second year that the master’s students in the department have run a half-marathon representing the UNC School of Public Health. Last year, six students completed the Nashville (Tenn.) Half-Marathon.
