Shelley Golden, MPH, lecturer in health behavior and health education at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has received the Orange County (N.C.) Rape Crisis Center’s Margaret Henderson Award for Service and Self-Care, the Center has announced. Golden will accept the award at the organization’s annual meeting at the Carrboro (N.C.) Century Center on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. The Center, a nonprofit, volunteer agency established in 1974, provides services to rape survivors and community education in awareness and prevention of sexual violence. Golden has served in a number of roles at the Center over the last decade, most recently completing a term as the organization’s president. She is also one of the original and ongoing members of its diversity committee. Jo Anne Earp, ScD, professor and chair of the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, says that through Golden’s volunteer leadership at OCRCC, “she has been able to apply her cutting-edge knowledge about intimate partner violence – and how to prevent it – to improve both the Center and the lives of the women (and men) who need its services.” Earp adds that Golden has “attracted highly qualified staff, gotten the word out about rape and interpersonal violence as major public health and social justice issues, and attracted significant resources to the agency in the form of grants and major contributions.” Noting that the UNC health behavior and health education department is nationally known for its research and service in the area of women’s health and violence prevention, Earp called Golden “the ultimate ambassador for UNC Chapel Hill, bringing the knowledge and skills of the University into the community to raise awareness about intimate partner violence, initiate programs that help prevent such violence from occurring, and help hospitals learn how to identify and work with victims of abuse.” UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health contact: Ramona DuBose, director of communications, (919) 966-7467 or ramona_dubose@unc.edu. |
