Funded Internships For Gillings Students

In this section we provide information on funded global health internships that are open only to UNC Gillings students. We have partnered with global health organizations (e.g., FHI 360, IntraHealth International and the Pan American Health Organization) to offer these funded experiences for students.

CLOSED FHI 360-UNC Public Health Fellowship
FHI 360, in partnership with Global Health Solutions, offers a fellowship program for current or prospective UNC public health doctoral students and rising second-year master’s students (first-years entering fall 2017). FHI 360’s mission is to improve lives worldwide by addressing complex public health issues through research, education and services.     • Upload these documents in the appropriate location in the online application:
      • Resume or CV
      • Current unofficial transcript
        • If an incoming doctoral student, official transcript from previous graduate work
        • If a master’s student, only include your master’s-level coursework (do not include any undergraduate coursework)
        • If a current doctoral student, only include your doctoral-level coursework (do not include your master’s transcripts or coursework)
  • Letters of Recommendation (2)
    • Recommendations should come from (1) a former employer and (2) a faculty member with whom you have an established relationship (current or past).

CLOSED IntraHealth International Summer Fellows

IntraHealth International offers a summer fellowship program for current public health master’s and doctoral students enrolled at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. IntraHealth, a North Carolina-based nonprofit organization, fosters local solutions to healthcare challenges by improving health worker performance, strengthening health systems, harnessing technology and leveraging partnerships.

CLOSED PAHO CLAP/SMR – WHO Collaborating Center for Research Evidence for Sexual and Reproductive Health Summer Fellows

The Pan American Health Organization’s (PAHO) Latin American Center for Perinatology, Women’s and Reproductive Health (CLAP/SMR) would like to welcome UNC Gillings students to apply for practicum opportunities on areas of interest in sexual and reproductive health in Latin American and the Caribbean. Two fellowships with Dr. Rodolfo Gómez Ponce de León, PAHO-CLAP/SMR’s Regional Sexual and Reproductive Health Advisor are available for summer 2018. Students would spend part of the practicum residing in Montevideo, Uruguay and the remainder of the time in Chapel Hill. Awardees will receive a $1000 travel stipend to help offset expenses.

OPEN Bender Curry Family Undergraduate Public Health Global Internship Award

The award is intended to support an internship experience in a country not previously worked for an undergraduate student at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. It is designed to support students with a strong commitment to global health, but with limited previous international travel and work experience.

Global Quality Graduate Student Internship

The goal of this internship is to support one or more of multiple projects focused on assessing and improving quality of care globally. The graduate student intern will work directly with Sheila Leatherman, Research Professor in Health Policy and Management, through Ms. Leatherman’s role as part of the leadership team for the WHO-ISQua project for National Quality Policy and Strategies in LMICs.

Microfinance-Health Internship

Pro Mujer is a development organization offering women across Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Peru an integrated package of microfinance services, primary healthcare, and business and health education. Pro Mujer is currently piloting or rolling out a number of new initiatives in its health services delivery and health education programming across its five countries of operation. The internship will support its health team in the implementation and the evaluation of these initiatives.

Pre-Disseration Travel AwardThese awards help students early in their doctoral studies do preliminary explorations of potential research materials/sites/methods in preparation for writing their dissertation proposal. Institute of African American Research: Summer Graduate Research GrantGraduate Student Summer Research Grant (GSSRG) provides funding to masters, predoctoral and professional graduate students in any discipline who are conducting research as part of their degree requirements. Students’ research projects must concern African Americans or the broader African diaspora and have clear relevance to IAAR’s mission. Students must also be in good standing and have completed four semesters of graduate coursework toward a doctoral or two semesters of coursework toward a masters degree at UNC-Chapel Hill.
