Four abstracts of work conducted by faculty members and students at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health have been accepted for presentation at the 138th annual American Public Health Association Meeting and Exposition, to be held Nov. 6-10 in Denver.

The abstracts describe global health curricula projects led by Margaret (Peggy) Bentley, PhD, professor of nutrition and associate dean for global health at the School; Bruce Fried, PhD, associate professor of health policy and management; Rohit Ramaswamy, PhD, Gillings Visiting Clinical Associate Professor in the Public Health Leadership Program; Gretchen Van Vliet, MPH, Director of the Office of Global Health; and others.

“We’re delighted to be able to make such a substantive showing at the APHA meeting to feature our new global health programs. Our School has made globalizing the curricula a priority, and having our abstracts accepted represents the importance of a global focus among schools of public health,” Bentley said.The selected abstracts include:

  • Globalizing the core curricula in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health (poster)
    Fried; Bentley; Van Vliet; Mike Park, UNC doctoral student in health policy and management; and Peyton Purcell, MPH, School alumna
  • Development of an online global health certificate for healthcare professionals (oral presentation)
    Ramaswamy; Hollie Pavlica, DrPH, clinical assistant professor in the Public Health Leadership Program; and Van Vliet
  • Exploring the use of mobile phone text messaging to supplement discussion forums in a global distance learning program (oral presentation)
    Ramaswamy and Graeme Storer, PhD, director of VBNK, an organization in Phnom Penh that aims to improve effectiveness and quality of development practice and management in Cambodia’s social development sector
  • Factors contributing to successful participation and engagement in online discussions in a distance education program for international public health professionals (oral presentation)
    Ramaswamy and Kate Barker, Master of Public Health candidate in the Public Health Leadership Program
