General Information

Attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, ESE students are subject to the policies of the University Registrar (in particular, they should be familiar with the academic calendars, rules regarding residency, and the UNC grading system). The Graduate Student Handbook (PDF Version) is the ultimate governing document for post-baccalaureate study at UNC-Chapel Hill. Most of the Graduate School paperwork is handled by the ESE Student Affairs office.

The Office of Student Affairs also offers Career Services to students at the Gillings School of Global Public Health.

The ESE Student Services Office, located in Rosenau 161/162A, is open to students with any questions or concerns. The current process for addressing student concerns, along with some useful links, is laid out in this document.

The Graduate and Professional Student Federation offers a range of resources for graduate students at UNC-Chapel Hill, including class, information on Chapel Hill, and social and networking opportunities.

Course Planning and Verification

IMPORTANT: The Gillings School of Global Public Health (SPH) Office of Student Affairs maintains a page with Academic Forms, Policies and Support, which includes:

All master’s students should fill in the appropriate Course Approval Worksheet and submit it to the student service’s office before the end of their program (preferably, well before their defense).

Information on the Dual Degree Master’s degrees with City and Regional Planning is here, and a course worksheet (in draft) is also available for planning purposes.

All graduate students should complete their ENVR 400 requirement before graduation.

Committee and Defense

At least a couple of weeks before the defense of their thesis or technical report, master’s students should submit the

to the student services office, along with a 150-word (maximum) abstract. This makes three forms in total that are required before the defense, including the course approval form.

Finishing the Thesis/Technical Report

See the above tab on submitting theses, dissertations, and technical reports. Guidelines on how to write and format a thesis/dissertation (and these should be used for technical reports as well) are available here: Electronic Dissertation and Thesis Guide and Formatting Guidelines. Information on booking a room (for a defense or for any other reason) is here.
