First “Service in Action” Award Recipients Named
(Chapel Hill, NC) — The Department of Health Policy and Administration in the University of North Carolina’s School of Public Health named the first recipients of its “Service in Action” award for significant contributions made in 2005 in community preparedness and disaster management. The award recognizes individuals who made a significant difference in the lives of others by responding to or managing events related to a major disaster. The 13 recipients were honored as part of graduation ceremonies for the department’s certificate programs in community preparedness/disaster management and health care management. Each recipient received an engraved bronze medallion in recognition of their service. “These individuals represent public service above and beyond the call of duty,” said James Porto, PhD, MPA, director of the executive master’s program and clinical assistant professor. “Each one of them responded to the call of helping others at considerable personal expense. They are role models that all of us can and should follow.” Many of the recipients responded to the events immediately following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. For example, while a team of volunteers worked in Mississippi helped coordinate the state’s animal response and sheltering programs, another team joined other volunteers in Louisiana to help track resources for the New Orleans Emergency Operations Center.
