UNC-Chapel Hill named NIOSH Center of Excellence for Total Worker Health®

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has funded 10 Centers of Excellence for Total Worker Health®, which promote policies, programs and practices that integrate protection from work-related safety and health hazards with promotion of injury and illness prevention efforts to advance worker well-being. The new Carolina Center of Excellence in Total Worker Health and Well-Being is housed within the UNC-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Groundbreaking study on staff wellness in child care centers named Paper of the Year

Child care workers are among the lowest paid workers in the United States, and they face a variety of health concerns. A 2020 study that sets the stage for a Total Worker Health® approach to improving their health outcomes has been named Paper of the Year by the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.

Gillings School drops GRE requirement for 8 graduate degrees

Leaders at the Gillings School are committed to creating a more equitable world through inclusive teaching, research and practice. To support this mission, the School will no longer require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test scores from applicants to the Master of Public Health degree — the School’s largest degree program — and most other master’s-level graduate programs. This change is effective immediately.

Survey shows half of all workplaces in America offer health and wellness programs

Workplace health promotion programs are increasing in the United States, according to researchers at the Gillings School, the CDC and RTI International. Nearly half of all workplaces in the nation offer some level of health promotion or wellness programs, and 17 percent of workplaces with 50 or more employees offer comprehensive workplace health promotion programs.

Linnan recognized as HERO for leadership in workplace health

Dr. Laura Linnan, professor of health behavior and associate dean for academic and student affairs at the UNC Gillings School, was honored Sept. 26 with a 2016 Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO) research award for her leadership in the field of workplace health and well-being.
