Expert panel to discuss energy usage, global climate change

| A panel of four experts representing academia and industry will explore the connections between energy use and global climate change in a free panel discussion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Jan. 23.The “Discussion on Energy and Global Climate Change” is part of the Carolina Environmental Program’s 2005-2006 Environmental Seminar Series and is co-sponsored by UNC’s Center for Sustainable Enterprise and Sustainability Office. The location for the 7:30 p.m. event will be Koury Auditorium in Kenan-Flagler Business School’s McColl Building.

Richard Andrews
Dr. Richard “Pete” Andrews, Thomas Willis Lambeth distinguished professor of public policy at UNC, will moderate the discussion. Anderson joined Duke Energy in 2003. He previously was managing director and CEO of BHP Billiton Ltd./PLC. He has worked in the utility and natural resources industries for almost 30 years and also has held positions in the steel and automotive industries. Anderson’s April 2005 call for a national carbon tax in the United States was a major development in American energy and climate change policy. Crawford-Brown also is a professor of environmental sciences and engineering and public policy at UNC. He joined UNC from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1982. Crawford-Brown is the U.S. leader of the Community Carbon Reduction Project (CRed), which was recently adopted by the City of Cambridge, England, and the Town of Chapel Hill. Johnson joined Progress Energy in 1992 as a partner from the Raleigh law office of Hunton & Williams, where he specialized in representing utilities. Johnson holds a law degree from UNC. Schlesinger also is James B. Duke professor of biogeochemistry. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and is an internationally recognized authority on global climate change, especially chemical changes in the environment resulting from changes in our climate. The Carolina Environmental Program is a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to addressing factors that build an environmentally sustainable society. The program offers majors in environmental science and environmental studies within the College of Arts and Sciences and environmental health science within the School of Public Health; fosters collaborative research on large-scale environmental challenges; and provides technical assistance, training and up-to-date information on environmental issues to N.C. communities.
