Trends in Academic Publishing Workshop

April 22, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Taking advantage of a visit by an experienced Yale University Press (YUP) editor, the event will provide a forum to discuss issues in academic publishing and introduce authors to editors at leading university presses. The two-part event starts with a panel discussion led by anthropologist Peter Redfield and featuring YUP’s Jean Thomson Black, UNC Press’ Chuck Grench, and Duke University Press’ Gisela Fosado. Second, an author-editor workshop will offer one-half hour slots where authors could discuss book projects with one or more of the visiting editors.

The three editors specialize in a wide variety of fields in the humanities as well as the natural and social sciences. Jean Thomson Black is Senior Executive Editor for Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Medicine at Yale Press; she edited Christian C. Lentz’s book on Vietnamese territory (Contested Territory: Ðien Biên Phu and the Making of Northwest Vietnam). She also has published Pete Andrews’ book on the history of American environmental policy (Managing the Environment, Managing Ourselves), and two books by Alan Feduccia (Biology Department) on the origin and evolution of birds. Her remit includes the natural sciences as well as agrarian studies, history of science, environmental history, environmental studies, and the medical humanities. Chuck Grench is Executive Editor of UNC Press; he  edits works in history, primarily American, African American, Cold War studies, and borderlands studies. He has worked with many UNC and Duke faculty members, among them Juliana Barr, Tom Rankin, Fitz Brundage, Lisa Lindsay, and Lloyd Kramer. And Gisela Fosado acquires in a wide range of fields for Duke University Press, including anthropology, sociology, American and Atlantic World history, gender and sexuality studies, race and ethnicity, African American and Africana studies, environmental studies, and Latin American and Latinx studies. She has published books by Arturo Escobar (Anthropology) and a recent translation by John Chasteen (History).

Jean Thomson Black of Yale University Press has also agreed to be available all day Tuesday, April 23, to meet with anyone who might like to consider publishing with Yale Press and for whom sometime on Tuesday would be more convenient than Monday afternoon. Please contact Pete Andrews if you are interested.
