PrEP in 2019 Talk

Christopher Hurt, MD, associate profession in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the UNC School of Medicine, will present a talk titled “PrEP in 2019: State of the Science and Challenges Ahead.” Refreshments will be served.

Christopher Hurt, MD, is an associate professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the UNC School of Medicine and a faculty affiliate in the UNC Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases. His clinical expertise is in the treatment of HIV, hepatitis C and sexually transmitted infections. He has a special interest in the sexual health of men who have sex with men (MSM), who are at risk for or living with HIV infection.

Dr. Hurt’s research focuses on understanding the structural and behavioral factors that influence the spread of HIV among MSM – especially young MSM of color in the Southeastern United States. His research in this area is split between studying HIV testing and prevention behaviors, and the scale-up and implementation of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) across North Carolina. His K23 mentored career development award examines whether HIV self-testing is a viable means of increasing the frequency of testing among young, Black MSM – a group disproportionately impacted by HIV incidence. Previous work in this area has involved sexual network investigations and the application of spatial epidemiological methods to question the dynamics of HIV transmission in North Carolina.

In addition to his public health-oriented HIV research, Dr. Hurt is interested in the epidemiology and clinical management of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. His is the director of the UNC ID Clinic’s HCV Treatment Team, helping clinic providers manage patients with HCV mono-infection and HIV/HCV co-infection. He also helps oversee HIV- and HCV-related clinical trials within the UNC Global HIV Prevention and Treatment Clinical Trials Unit.
